N0-18 The Birth Home of Shiso Kanakuri
Shiso Kanakuri, who is celebrated as the father of marathon running in Japan, was born here in Nagomi Town in 1891.
Shiso was the first Japanese person to enter the Olympics after setting his third world record as a marathon runner. It is said that running the 12km round-trip from here to elementary school every day formed the basis of his marathon running.
The total distance he ran over his entire life in order to promote marathon running is said to be 250,000km – which is equivalent to 6.25 laps around the Earth. He passed away in 1983 at the age of 92, and he left behind the legacy of his mentality in the words “physical power, mental power and effort.”
