N0-15 Tetsusei Tanko (Iron Cuirass)
Several pieces of armor were among the burial accessories found in the Etafunayama Tumulus. This iron Tanko (cuirass) is one of them. “Tanko” is the most common type of armor used from the Tumulus period until the Nara period. Unlike the warrior armor people typically imagine, Tanko is short and in a simple design that only covers the body. The Tanko discovered is made from iron plates riveted together. It is thought that a hinge-shaped metal fixture was attached on the right side of the body. Few suits have been found in a state in which the original form and structure are so clearly visible, and with this valuable relic, you can imagine how warriors looked in the Tumulus period.
